Legend:
The hospital for Africans in Boma opened its doors in 1904. The vast complex consisted of a series of local natural stone pavilions and accommodated 150 beds for a total population of 4,000 Africans. The hospital’s construction was part of the efforts made by Leopold II to shed a more favourable light on his colonial regime. However, up until the 1920s, several visitors pointed out the appalling conditions in the institution.
