Travelling in the colony was not without risk. Before 1908 one out of three Europeans travelling to Congo died. Julien Fromont (1873-1899), substitute of Maffei who got ill and returned to Europe, got a bullet in his heart during an attack against Mulumu Niama, a local Sanga chief.
