The project Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe) started on May 1 st , 2009. It ran for three
years and has been financed within the framework of the European program eContentplus. The aim of the
project was to bring together existing digital collections of biodiversity legacy literature from the libraries in
Europe’s natural history institutions 2 into a free and openly accessible online portal at www.bhl-europe.eu, from where it is also harvested by Europe’s digital library, archive, and museum Europeana.
This report consists of an review and evaluation of the project in order that lessons learned can be applied in the context of the Open Up! project.
