Dance mutuashi

This summer, artist Monik Tenday invites you to a dance workshop at the AfricaMuseum, where she will teach a style of Congolese music: mutuashi.

""

Mutuashi is a traditional musical style of the Luba people (Baluba, from the Kasai region). Its fame spread worldwide thanks to singer Tshala Muana (1958-2022), nicknamed the ‘Queen of mutuashi’, who propelled mutuashi onto the international scene by singing in her language, Tshiluba, and performing the folk dance steps of this rhythm.

Who is Monik Tenday ?

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo region of Kasai, Monik Tenday is a nomadic singer-guitarist with boundless energy. She boasts a mosaic of multicolored sounds intertwined with styles such as soul, folk, mutuashi, pop, rumba, blues, and Afrobeat. The highly rhythmic musical universe that she calls ‘folk pop’ features polyharmonized songs written in languages of her country: Tshiluba, Lingala, Swahili, and Kikongo.

An intoxicating musical potion, seasoned with a powerful voice that exudes a charisma and charm worthy of her name: ‘tenday,’ in Tshiluba, means ‘give praise.’

After her studies in general education, she enrolled in the music department of Kinshasa’s Institut national des Arts (INA). Upon graduation, she was hired there to teach classical guitar and music history. Her albums (Je vous regarde, Envol, Envol intégrale, Opération radar) pay tribute to her parents and grandparents, who bequeathed her this cultural wealth and instilled a love of singing and guitar-playing in her.

Monik Tenday’s music creates a sense of well-being and advocates living together, addressing life's themes with friendly humour, calling for unity in the face of the violence that shakes the world, and reflecting the cultural values of her native land.
