Arabo-Swahili heritage in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

Around 1860, Arabo-Swahili traders from the coastal regions of East Africa settled in the eastern part of what is now the DRC. There, they developed extensive trade networks and had a profound impact on the societies of the region. At the end of the 19th century, the Independent State of the Congo forcibly took control of these trade networks, thereby bringing an end to this hegemony.

During this themed guided tour, you will discover the history and rich heritage of the Arab-Swahili presence in eastern Congo. Islam and Islamic traditions are deeply rooted there, and Swahili is now one of the four official languages of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
