The article presents the synthesis of results published on the basis of recent investigations carried out in the western branch of the East African rift. Three major rifting cycles are identified in the area: the Karoo cycle completed by the late Jurassic (Gondwana) peneplain; the Cretaceous cycle completed by late Cretaceous (African) peneplain, and the late Tertiary lasting till now and is still active. The paper discusses the structural evolution of these rift systems citing most updated works.
