FishBase ( is the world's largest and most succesful online encyclopaedia on fishes. FishBase provides comprehensive species data, including information on taxonomy, morphology, ecology, distribution, population dynamics, etc. and has direct species-level links to external databases such as GenBank, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Catalog of Fishes. FishBase also provides tools, which can be used a.o. for fish identification, construction of trophic pyramids, and analysis of ecological parameters and fisheries statistics. FishBase is a most useful tool for ichthyological research and management of fisheries, aquaculture and biodiversity worldwide. As a member of the international FishBase consortium, the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) is responsible for the information on the African fresh and brackish water fishes in FishBase. The RMCA also organises each year a three months training session on fish taxonomy and the use of FishBase for five African scientists.
