Culture & Society
LUGAHIZI
The project aims to give voice to local knowledge through the documentation of some fifty languages, particularly in specialised fields such as fauna, flora, fishing, basketry, cooking, agricultural activity, perception of the climate and landscape, astronomy, cosmogony, life cycle rites, art, pharmacopoeia, conflict resolution, etc. Documenting these languages, some of which are in danger of disappearing, would enable the cultures concerned to be valued and to participate in the debate on a better societal and environmental future for all thanks to the ancient knowledge they contain and which is sometimes forgotten. The project will thus contribute to the recognition of the indispensable but often neglected role of local languages in a better local anchoring of development projects/initiatives and a better orientation towards local assets rather than on needs/deficits often perceived as such by Western agents.
