A structural study has been made of the southern flank of the Rocroi Massif in the French Ardennes, along the section between Nouzonville and Montherme. It is at the Rocher de l'Hermitage at Bogny-sur-Meuse, where the unconformity of the Gedinnian on the Revinian is exposed, that the Caledonian structures can be distinguished from those belonging to the Hercynian cycle. The former, which only occur in the Cambrian rocks, result from two phases of deformation, DI and DZ, while the latter, which are present in the Devonian as well as in the Cambrian, result from two later phases, D3 and D4.
