This volume contains papers and posters presented at the first annual workshop of IGCP 400 project "Geodynamics of Continental Rifting" which was held in Dublin, Ireland, 20-22 March 1997. This workshop marked the beginning of the scientific programme of IGCP 400. The principal purpose was to review the state of knowledge of the main continental rifts and to identify research priorities for further action. There was a special emphasis on the East African, Afro-Arabian, Baikal, European and Rio Grande rift systmes, and on rifted passive margins.
