HARISSA

Natural HAzards, RISks and Society in Africa : developing knowledge and capacities
While pursuing the same overall objective of reducing the impact of natural hazards on society, the current proposal of the HARISSA-II project is strongly based on the most successful achievements obtained in the HARISSA-I project (1919-1923). Its guiding principle is therefore consolidation and is based on 5 pillars: 1/ the training at academic level of doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, 2/ the documentation and understanding of hazards and disasters through an original citizen science approach, 3/ the strengthening of the dialogue between scientists and decision-makers, 4/ the pursuit of awareness-raising initiatives in the different strata of society on natural hazards and associated risks through cross-cutting or specific activities and 5/ the consolidation of all previous achievements which includes the valorisation of relevant scientific research results and technical expertise for the establishment of reliable multi-scale reference maps of the DR Congo.
HARISSA-II indeed provides an unprecedented perspective on co-produced, transdisciplinary, longitudinal strategic research. Through effective North-South and South-South partnerships and collaborations, it enables substantial progress in the study of natural hazards and disasters and the implementation of relevant mitigation methodologies and tools designed for operational
