Notice : | This big boulder was partly buried under dust and finer rockfall. The not buried part of the boulder to the right side of the picture is much more fissured, shows a much more irregular surface than the buried part and is darker in color because of the presence of 'desert varnish', a coating of iron and manganise. The part of the boulder buried, shows the presence of a flake mantle as can be encountered in cases of speroidal weathering, onion weathering, core stone weathering. It is rather exceptional to find limestone affected by this type of weathering. |
