Hybrid schistosome parasites pose a threat to human and animal health in the southern African region. They can have an enhanced transmission potential and can display a greater tolerance against drug treatment, therefore it is important to monitor them closely. The main objectives of this project are: Specific Objective 1 (SO 1): to identify hybrid schistosome species and understand their distribution and host use in selected areas in Zimbabwe and South Africa Specific Objective 2 (SO 2): to create a network of expertise on snail-borne diseases involving the University of Zimbabwe, the University of KwaZulu Natal and the RMCA. Two MSc students will be trained in this project, one at the University of Zimbabwe and one at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, together with technicians linked to these institutes.
