Intellectual property rights

The Royal Museum for Central Africa (hereinafter referred to as 'RMCA') has made the required reasonable efforts to identify and/or find and/or locate the copyright holders of texts, photos, video clips and illustrations or other works on our Website, databases or in our online (pdf) publications. Despite our best endeavours, it is possible that we may not have been able to identify and/or trace all rights holders. If you are of the opinion that you are the holder of rights to certain works, and you feel that you have sustained prejudice, then we ask you to contact us so that we can put an end to further use of these works without your consent.

The user acknowledges that the data provided, such as texts, photos, drawings, maps, video images, illustrations, logos, slogans or research results are protected by intellectual property rights, which are the exclusive property of the RMCA. The user acknowledges that the right of access to the Website does not give rise to partial or entire transfer of intellectual property rights.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, the data provided by the RMCA may only be used under the terms and conditions of the 'Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike Belgium licence' (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 BE).

Under this licence, the data may be copied, edited and disseminated under the following conditions:

  • Attribution - The user must mention the name given to the work by the creator or licensor (but not in such a way that it creates the impression that they approve your work or your use of the work).
  • Non-commercial - The user may not use the work for commercial purposes.
  • Share alike - If the user edits the work, the work arising from it may only be used under the same licence as this licence or a licence of the same type.

Data which is provided by the RMCA may only be used for private, educational or scientific purposes (excluding any commercial use).

The source (URL of the webpage) and the name of the project and/or researcher must be mentioned clearly on every copy and in every publication.

Commercial use of the data provided in whatever form and by whatever means, is only possible with the prior, express, written consent of the Director General of the RMCA. The request must be addressed to him by email DIR@africamuseum.be or by post to the Royal Museum for Central Africa, for the attention of Director General Bart Ouvry, Leuvensesteenweg 13, 3080 Tervuren, Belgium.

For data provided in the context of specific scientific projects, different and/or stricter conditions may apply.
